This book presents a survey of 19th century Dutch arts based on the collections at the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. One hundred objects were carefully selected and give a fascinating and varied picture of the arts of the period. Attention is given to well-known as well as lesser known painters, sculptors and makers of drawings, among whom are Adriaan de Lelie, Cornelis Kruseman, Jan Willem Pieneman, Louis Royer, Barend Koekkoek, Jacob Maris, Jozef Israëls and Piet Mondriaan. There is much consideration too for the striking decorative and applied arts of the time like furniture, silver, dress and porcelain. And the new 19th century art form of photography is obviously represented in some detail. Several introductory essays go more deeply into the historic and aesthetic developments of the century, thereby giving context to the featured objects. Dutch Arts: 1800-1900 is the last in a series of four books highlighting the arts in the Netherlands from the early 15th to the late 19th century. The compilers of this final edition are Gijs van der Ham, Ronald de Leeuw, Jenny Reynaerts and Robert-Jan te Rijdt, assisted by other experts from and outside the Rijksmuseum.
